Tune: Jesu, meines Lebens Leben (Christ the Life of All the Living)
1 At the waning of light's hour,
When the sun doth shineth nay,
Bid us not in fear to cower,
But to find in Thee our stay.
Thou Lord Jesus art our dwelling,
Midst the tumults of life swelling,
Hide us in Thine wings this night,
Safely to that day of light.
2 Lord abide with us this evening,
For the day hath far been spent.
Grant that I to Thee be cleaving,
Even while I sleep attent.
O my Lord, my soul doth tire,
And I seek Thy blest retire.
Grant to me Thy blesséd peace,
And that all my fears would cease.
3 Lord I thank Thee Heav’nly Father,
Through Thine only Son adored
That Ye kept me by Thy honor,
Safe this day O gracious Lord.
Lord forgive my sins I pray Thee
And from ev’ry danger stay me.
I commend my body, soul,
Unto Thee Lord God of all.
4 Lord the evil one doth prow-l,
Spitting darts of seething hate.
Grant that when I hear his growl,
I wouldst see Thee at the gate,
And return my eyes to sleepeth,
For my Shepherd watch He keepeth.
Jesus guard my soul from fright,
Shepherd dear, my soul's delight.
5 Lord from dreams of demon’s jesting,
Guard my mind from such alarm.
Wresteth from me Satan's testing,
Giveth solace by Thine Arm,
That those sins my flesh adoreth,
Be cast out, and Christ restoreth,
Me to don a robe of white,
Bringing me to realms of light.
6 “I am baptized into Jesus”
Let this be our final thought.
O how great Thou art Who sees us,
Watching o’re Thy resting flock.
O Good Father, Son, and Spirit,
Come our dwelling, now to visit,
As we make our journey home,
Bid us ne’re to be alone.
